The Club

Swimming club “Levski – Sofia” is one of the oldest and most famous swimming clubs in Bulgaria. Throughout its history the club has undergone a lot of organizational changes, yet it was able to produce remarkable results. The club started working in the 1930s with some of the best talent: Emanuil Atanasov, Max Stanishev, Peter Iranek, Asen Savov, George Gaidardjiev (the first water diving Balkan champion in 1931), the brothers Nikola and George Karandjovi, Ljubka Barakova and a lot more. After the merger of Levski and Spartak, the club inherited Spartak’s history and added a lot more names like Stephan Popov, George Popov, Ivan Strogov, Atanas Ginchev, Vasil Biolchev, Zinaiida Kononova, Vasil Zlatarev, Hristo Chervenkov. Nowadays Levski is the biggest "supplier" of swimmers for the Bulgarian national swimming team. Some of the best swimmers are: Valentin Borisov, Ljudmil Stoev, Ani Kostova, Janet Slavcheva (the first Bulgarian who took place at the European final in Barcelona-70), Albena Popova, Branimir Popov, Ivan Tzanov, Krassimir Nenov, Kamen Atov, Borqna Dimitrova and many others, trained by professional trainers like Ognyan Barakov, Stephan Popov, Elisaveta Treneva, Iliq Gugalov, Stefka Popova, Lilqna Krusteva. Since 1998 the club`s main coach is Krassimir Tumanov. In the last decade, the main accomplishments for the club and the Bulgarian swimming as a whole came from Petar Stoychev. For many years the Levski swimming team has been training at the Spartak swimming pool in Sofia - the capital city of Bulgaria.
